Curriculum
MFA in Theatre
These tracks lay out a specific professional path that students will follow to graduate in two years. Students will work through the progression of classes as a cohort, collaborating on projects within classes and in our productions, which serve as our research laboratory.
- Requirements for the overall degree are 45 semester hours, including:
3 hrs. Acting/Directing Theory
3 hrs. Dramatic Theory and Criticism
OR 3 hrs. Selected Periods in Theatre History
- Three semester hours chosen from the following:
Acting
Set Design
Lighting Design
Costume Design for the Stage
Make-up
- Three semester hours chosen from the following:
a) internship with a professional theatre establishment approved by the Director of the School and the Head of Graduate Programs.
b) creative project performed, designed or directed with the UH School of Theatre & Dance, approved by the Director of the School and the Head of Graduate Programs.
Other course to fulfill the rest of the required 45 hours are determined by the Head of Graduate Programs, with an emphasis on one of three tracks: Acting, Directing, Design.
MA in Theatre
The M.A. program with thesis is recommended for students with a strong interest in the scholarly and academic aspects of theatre. The M.A. degree consists of 36 credit hours. The following courses are required for M.A. students:
- 3 hrs. Dramatic Theory & Criticism
3 hrs. Selected Periods in Theatre History
3 hrs. Acting & Directing Theory
3 hrs. Dramaturgy
In addition, most M.A. students are expected to complete six credit hours of a thesis project. The other eighteen credit hours are made up of graduate-level elective courses taken within the School of Theatre & Dance and up to nine graduate-level credit hours taken in other departments.
MA in Theatre - Summer Program
The Summer M.A. program
is designed for professional theatre educators. Classes will begin Monday June 29h, 2009 and will run Monday through Thursday, 9am-9pm through Thursday July 30, 2009. Students will have long weekends free to study and to explore the exciting Arts Community that Houston has to offer. The last 5 days of class will be spent off campus taking a class designed for theatre educators and seeing productions.
The M.A. degree consists of 36 credit hours, with no thesis required. Coursework in the Summer M.A. for Theatre Educators is developed keeping in mind that teachers want to plan shows for the following year and further develop their theatre programs and classes.
