Acting audition info
The acting audition consists of two contrasting one minute contemporary monologues; the faculty will work with you in an effort to get to know you better. Dress comfortably to move (there is dressing room space where you can change for the audition if you choose).
- Here are some tips:
Don’t use audition pieces that require an accent.
Avoid monologues with telephone calls.
Choose contemporary pieces from plays published after 1910.
No movie monologues or original pieces please.
Pick audition pieces appropriate to your age and emotional range.
Choose two pieces that contrast.
Avoid overacting and/or overly dramatic material.
Remember that sexually explicit or socially offensive material usually works against an auditioner.
Avoid Shakespeare for initial auditions.
Keep your audition simple and honest.
Avoid elaborate staging; you can plan for one chair to be provided.
Know the titles, authors, and characters in your audition pieces and read the entire play so that you know the context of the piece.
No UIL/forensics introductions are necessary.
Be prepared to be flexible with your work and repeat your monologue after direction is given from our faculty.
Desgin/Technical presentation info
The tech audition consists of a portfolio review with our faculty. Please be sure to include samples outlining your process and showing the finished product in portfolio presentations.
General requirements
- Automatic Admission
If you are a freshman who graduated in the top 20 percent of your high school class, you will be automatically admitted to the university. All applicants, regardless of class rank, must submit SAT I or ACT scores.
- Regular Admission
You will be admitted if you rank in the top 50 percent of your high school class and have a minimum of 1000 SAT I** or ACT 21.
- ** The new SAT has three components (writing, critical reading, and mathematics). The minimum SAT I of 1000 will include only the scores from the critical reading and mathematics.
- Individual Review
If you who do not meet the requirements for Automatic or Regular Admission, you will be reviewed individually by UH admissions officers. Additional information and factors available from a completed Apply Texas Application (Part2 I and II) will be considered.
- Additional factors include, but are not limited to, the following: first-generation college attendance, socio-economic background, extent and rigor of your high school curriculum, special talents, abilities or awards earned, family responsibilities, leadership activities, public service, and extracurricular activities.
- Applicants in the review category may submit additional material if such material would strengthen the student’s claim for admission, i.e. an especially strong letter of recommendation or a persuasive statement from the student explaining special circumstances. GED or home schooled applicants will be considered for admission by individual review.
